The newly formed National Broadcast Orchestra (NBO) plays its Vancouver première at the Chan Centre on January 8, 2010.  The concert will include many connections to the orchestra’s former home, the CBC, while also building stability for the NBO’s new life as an independent organization.

The January 8 concert is a Gala Benefit Concert in support of the NBO, and the first of a series of concerts to be recorded for broadcast on CBC Radio 2.  CBC host Bill Richardson will emcee the event.

Conducted by founding Artistic Director Alain Trudel, the National Broadcast Orchestra will be joined by distinguished guest soloists Anton Kuerti, piano, and Jens Lindemann, trumpet.

The program features the world première of a chamber symphony by Michael Oesterle.  Entitled The Sparrow’s Ledger, it was commissioned by the CBC for this inaugural event.  The piece was inspired in part by Prokofiev’s Classical Symphony, which will be paired with the work on this program.

Lindemann will perform two new Canadian concertos, one by Edmonton composer Allan Gilliland and the other by Trudel.  Both works will showcase Lindemann’s legendary virtuosity.

Kuerti will bring to life a long-forgotten Beethoven Piano Concerto which has become a labour of love for the acclaimed Canadian pianist.  Concerto No. 0, as it has become known, survives as a published piano reduction.  The orchestration has been re-invented by Kuerti so that audiences can once again experience Beethoven’s earliest concerto live.  This will be the broadcast première for the work.
