Composers’ Competition
The Galaxie Rising Star Composers’ Competition is open to emerging Canadian composers aged 35 and under as of the October 15th deadline for entries. Competitors will submit chamber orchestra works of eight to ten minutes in duration. Submitted works will be reviewed by a national panel of composers chaired by NBO artistic director Alain Trudel.
The grand prize composition will be featured on the NBO’s November tour program, which will be recorded for broadcast on CBC Radio Two. The winning composer will receive a cash prize of $3000, and the second prize winner will receive $1500. $500 will be awarded to a promising young composer aged 21 or under.
Competition Guidelines
- The competition is open to Canadian citizens or landed immigrants aged 35 or younger as of the competition deadline of October 15, 2010.
- Only one composition per Competitor is permitted.
- The required submission is a work for chamber orchestra, lasting from eight to ten minutes. Instrumentation may include the following: 1202 2000 str-64331. That is to say, available instruments include: one flute, two oboes, two bassoons, two horns, six first violins, four second violins, three violas, three cellos, one bass. Submitted works should NOT call for doubling (e.g. piccolo) or any other instruments not explicitly listed above (e.g. timpani).
- Competitors should take into account the placement of their work within the following program: Haydn, Symphony No. 85 (22′); Mozart, Concert Rondo, K269 (7′); Beethoven, Romance No. 2 (8′); Jacques Hétu, Adagio and rondo, Op.3b (7′); Cameron Wilson, CBC Commission – Canadian Seasons (18′); Grand Prize winning work, Galaxie Rising Star Composers’ Competition (8-10′)
- Competitors must submit four (4) complete, printed and bound copies of the score.
- It is strongly recommended that Competitors submit an audio file if available.
- The title or opus number must appear on the score (and audio file, if applicable).
- The Competitor’s name must NOT appear anywhere on the score (or audio file, if applicable).
- Competition administrators will process all application packages. Jurors will receive only scores and audio files with no identifying information.
- Orchestral parts are the responsibility of the Competitor and should be prepared at the same time as the score, ready to deliver upon announcement of winners.
- The NBO will retain copies of all scores submitted to the competition for future reference. Competitors may arrange to have extra copies returned at their own expense.
- All Competitors must certify that the work submitted is original and unpublished, and that it has not been performed or broadcast in whole or in part or in any other version.
- Competitors retain all rights to their work, but allow their submissions to be freely performed, recorded, and broadcast by the National Broadcast Orchestra.
- Entries must be delivered in person, by courier, or by registered mail. All entries must be received no later than the final deadline of October 15th, 2010 (regardless of postmark date).
- All works not meeting these requirements will be rejected by the prize administrators without recourse.
- The decision of the judges will be final. Only award winners will be notified. The judges reserve the right to divide the award money or to decline to make an award.
