Alain Trudel
Alain Trudel, Artistic Director and Principal Conductor
Born in 1966, Alain Trudel has established himself internationally as a truly remarkable musician. He is widely hailed as a conductor, having led professional orchestras and ensembles in a wide variety of repertoire, with repeated return invitations.
Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the National Broadcast Orchestra, Alain Trudel is also Music director and conductor of l’Orchestre Symphonique de Laval, in one of Canada’s most dynamic and fastest growing cities. Alain Trudel has served as Principal Guest Conductor of the Victoria Symphony and Artistic Advisor to the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra. Alain Trudel was unanimously named Conductor of the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra in 2004, a position that brings him great pride and joy.
On top of his projects with those orchestras, Trudel also participates in a number of exciting artistic projects around his native Canada and abroad. In September 2008 Trudel conducted the Toronto Symphony Orchestra on their Ontario tour (their fourth tour together). A frequent guest of the National Arts Centre Orchestra, Trudel conducted in their 2008 summer festival, their Young Audience series and appeared the eXpressions series in the Spring of 2009. In May, 2009 Trudel made his conducting début in Russia with the St-Petersburg Symphony Orchestra. Trudel also conducted the Albanian Radio-Television Orchestra. Back home he conducted the final round and Gala concert of the Montréal international music competition.
In the summer of 2009, Alain Trudel was the conductor of the National Youth Orchestra of Canada, conducting Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring and Mahler’s 6th symphony. Recently Trudel was awarded the 2007 Heinz Unger Prize, the only conducting prize awarded in Canada, designed to highlight and encourage the careers of conductors. In October 2007 he successfully replaced Maestro Andrew Davis at the last minute, conducting Beethoven’s Eroica Symphony with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. In the spring of 2008 Trudel made his conducting debut with l’Atelier Lyrique de l’Opéra de Montréal in Maurice Ravel’s L’heure espagnole and Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari’s Il Segreto di Susanna, using his own orchestrations. Beyond the borders of Canada, he has conducted the City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong, the Orquestra Sinfonic a de Guatemala, The Tokyo Metropolitan chamber orchestra, the Northern Sinfonia in the UK, and several others.
In Canada, Trudel has been invited and re-invited to conduct numerous orchestras including the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, the Victoria Symphony Orchestra, the National Arts Center Orchestra, Les Violons du Roy, Orchestra London, l’Orchestre Métropolitain du Grand Montréal, the Hamilton Philharmonic, the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra, Symphony Nova Scotia, the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony, the Edmonton Symphony and the Calgary Philharmonic. In addition he has conducted in several special contexts including leading Les Violons du Roy in a live recording at the Montréal International Jazz Festival and l’Orchestre Symphonique de Laval in a concert tribute to the Québec pop group Harmonium at the “Mondial Choral” for more than 120,000 people.
Philippe Labelle, Chair of the Board of Directors
Philippe Labelle is a corporate lawyer turned entrepreneur. He is currently the Managing Partner of a boutique private equity firm in Montreal. Since the first half of the 1990s, Philippe has advised Canadian private equity investors on various financing transactions, mergers and acquisitions. He has also founded a law firm that later merged with a now national firm, founded various business initiatives and has been extensively involved in the community. He chairs the board of directors of a shelter for women located in downtown Montreal and chairs the committee for special needs children of the Montreal School Board. He co-founded and chairs the National Broadcast Orchestra and sits on the board of directors of the Laval Symphony Orchestra. Philippe is the father of two boys.
Rob Gloor, Executive Director
Rob Gloor has over 15 years of management experience in Canadian cultural organizations. He has worked with opera companies, concert halls and orchestras in London, Kitchener, Hamilton, and Edmonton. He is a partner in GSI Management, providing arts management consulting and artist representation. Rob began advising the National Broadcast Orchestra as the company was preparing to file its corporate registration, and he was subsequently invited to join the leadership team as the founding Executive Director. Rob’s cultural management experience is backed up by extensive training in both music and management. Rob has a Bachelor’s degree in music from the University of Western Ontario, and an MBA from Queen’s University, along with specialized arts management training through the Banff Centre and the Centre for Cultural Management. For four years, he was an instructor in the Arts Management program at UWO. He has served on the board of the London Arts Council, and he is currently on the board of YOA Canada, supporting the Youth Orchestra of the Americas. Rob is married with two Schnoodles.
